Four appointments at BBC News

BBC News has made three senior international appointments and one domestic.

Jon Sopel has been appointed North America editor. Sopel, a lead anchor on BBC World News, replaces Mark Mardell who is taking over from Shaun Ley as presenter of BBC Radio 4's The World This Weekend and The World At One on Fridays.

Katya Adler has been appointed as Europe editor, based in Brussels. Adler, a world affairs correspondent at BBC World News, replaces Gavin Hewitt who was made BBC News chief correspondent last month.

Ian Pannell becomes international correspondent, covering global affairs. He will continue to be based in Washington.
