Evan Davis replaces Jeremy Paxman at Newsnight

The BBC has appointed Evan Davis as lead presenter of Newsnight, replacing Jeremy Paxman who left the show after 25 years last month.

Davis, a former economics editor at BBC News and Newsnight, will anchor the programme three nights a week from the autumn. He currently presents BBC Radio 4's Today and business programme The Bottom Line, in addition to BBC Two's Dragon's Den.

Newsnight editor Ian Katz said of the appointment: "Evan brings a rare combination of curiosity, intelligence and mischief to his broadcasting – just the qualities I want Newsnight to be known for."

Today on Radio 4 will continue with its five remaining presenters when Davis leaves.
