BBC News appoints chief correspondent

BBC News has appointed Gavin Hewitt to the senior editorial team as chief correspondent.

Hewitt has been the BBC's Europe editor for the past five years. He will cover major news stories domestically and internationally, provide analysis and insight to a wide range of assignments and will continue to report for BBC News Online.
